On May 1, 2010 a ruptured ExxonMobile pipeline in the Niger Delta, Nigeria, spilled more than a million gallons into the delta over seven days before the leak was stopped. Within days of this spill, thousands of barrels of oil were spilled when the nearby Shell Trans Niger pipeline was attacked by rebels. A few days after that, a large oil slick was found floating on Lake Adibawa in Bayelsa state and another in Ogoniland, all part of the Niger Delta region.

On November 10th 1995, Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight of his colleagues were hanged by the Nigerian military government for campaigning against the devastation of their homeland the Niger Delta by oil companies, in particular Shell. Ken was an activist, writer, political journalist and businessman and became the iconic leader of the minority Ogoni people’s struggle for environmental and social justice in Nigeria.
